Cobble Hill Townhouse

A Vintage and “Madcap” Reconstruction

This colorful townhouse is situated in the Cobble Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn. The initial project was meant to be only the selective renovation of the first and second floors. However, early demolition uncovered water infiltration and structural damage in the original 1840s-era shell. The work quickly turned into a full gut renovation. Agencie was brought into repair and restore the original 25ft wide structure while achieving the architect and clients’ vision for a “psychedelic wonderland.”

Structure Rearyard Extension

The structural restoration included a 2,000SF rearyard extension. To achieve an unobstructed double-height space on the parlor level, Agencie designed a robust steel moment frame system. This frame transferred the gravity and lateral loads from the upper floors to the foundations allowing for a “timeless” architectural layout. A bright yellow playground slide was custom engineered to link the kitchen terrace to the backyard.

The yellow slide is only one sign that this 19th-century house is not a standard Brooklyn renovation. The design features bright and delightful finishes and furnishings. The larger funky design elements were supported by Agencie engineered structural supports. The highlight being a secret passageway from the pantry to the entry hall that was fabricated with a DJ booth wrapped in a silk wall of marine life. Architectural Digest calls the house a “Tim Burton meets Fred Astaire fantasy.”
