Modular Housing
Red Hook

This project was conceived as a single instance, in a modular housing series designed by SHoP architects. To the connoisseurs, SHoP Architects are known as legendary explorers of design production and fabrication techniques. We at Agencie were completely flattered to be asked as Structural Engineer for this project.

Agencie has deep experience in design development, fabrication engineering, and logistical deployment of light weight architectural structures in the USA & Canada.

In this case, the project consisted of engineering a hot rolled steel superstructure with cold formed light weight structural steel framing infill. The structure is perched atop a pedestal supported by piles in order to address the soft soils often found in Red Hook, and the post hurricane Sandy flood planes.

As with all Structural Engineering by Agencie, our working process consists of hand sketches & calculations, structural analysis models, and close collaboration with the builders and craftspersons selected to implement the work.

Red Hook’s maritime village feel is augmented by its disconnection from New York’s subway grid. Surprisingly, one material that is being used extensively in recent (and very exciting) architectural work in Red Hook is Corten steel. See this link for a Corten facade screen Agencie is collaborating with KBAS on.
