Modernizing Historic Buildings

Historic Landmark buildings pose a unique conundrum: How to preserve and celebrate these heritage structures when updating them to accommodate present-day uses?

For some, this may be primarily a question about style. For us as designers, we engage Style as a term that is defined in the eye of the beholder, and in doing so, we have come to love many different styles. Some may favor historical precedent, others may be fascinated by Platonic rules of aesthetics, yet many will perceive it through a more social lens, one that has to do with human interactions and different groups’ roles in various settings.

And yet, there is a practical dimension to engaging our city legacies. We must work with Historic Landmarks and Heritage Preservation Departments, as we have done successfully in New York, Toronto, Miami, Jersey City, and many other cities. We have worked on window master plans for entire buildings, we’ve re-created historical interiors within Landmark Buildings, and we’ve appended modern interventions to the historic fabric. There are many ways to engage, and we have the skill set and experience to do so effectively on your behalf.
